This gene encodes a common acute lymphocytic leukemia antigen and is an important cell surface marker for the diagnosis of human acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This protein is present on leukemia cells with the pre-B phenotype, accounting for 85% of all cases. However, this protein is not only found in leukemia cells, but also in various normal tissues. It is a glycoprotein that is particularly abundant in the kidneys and is found in the brush edges of the proximal tubules and glomerular epithelium. The protein is a neutral endopeptidase that cleaves peptides at the amino terminus of hydrophobic residues and inactivates several peptide hormones.
