The gene encodes a small, monomeric, mainly non-structural protein that acts as a positive regulator of the Wnt/ -catenin signaling pathway. The protein interacts with a transcription repressor mediated by catenin in nuclear spots. It is thought to competitively block the interaction between inhibitors and catenin, leading to the up-regulation of target genes for catenin. The encoded protein may also play a role in the NF-kappaB and ERK1/2 signaling pathways. The expression of this gene may play a role in the proliferation of a variety of cancers including thyroid cancer, breast cancer and hematological malignancies.
