The gene encodes a nuclear phosphorylated protein that plays a role in maintaining genomic stability and also in tumor suppression. The encoded protein binds to other tumor suppressors, DNA damage sensors, and signal transducers to form a large polysubunit protein complex called the BRCA1 associated genomic monitoring complex (BASC).The protein plays a role in transcription, DNA repair, double strand break, and recombination. About 40 percent of inherited breast cancers and more than 80 percent of inherited breast and ovarian cancers are linked to mutations in the gene.
