BMI-1 is one of the polycomb group genes. Together with Ring1, it significantly enhances the E3 ubiquitin ligase activity of the catalytic subunit of Ring2. Bmi1 plays an important role in regulating cell proliferation and senescence by inhibiting p16Ink4a and p19Arf genes, and is necessary for the maintenance of artificial hematopoietic stem cells and neural stem cells. The antibody reacts with the 37kd BMI1 protein.
