BCL2 belongs to the Bcl-2 family. It inhibits apoptosis in a variety of cell systems, including factor-dependent lymphohematopoiesis and nerve cells. BCL2 regulates cell death by controlling the permeability of the mitochondrial membrane. It seems to play a role in the caspase feedback loop system. BCL2 inhibits caspase activity by preventing mitochondria from releasing cytochrome c and/or binding to activator of apoptosis (APAF-1).
