Bcl2 is a member of the B-cell lymphoma 2 protein family. Members of this family regulate cell death in a variety of cell types and have pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic activities. The protein encoded by this gene can inhibit mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis. This protein is a complete outer mitochondrial membrane protein, as part of the signal pathway, which controls mitochondrial permeability under the stimulation of apoptosis. The protein may also play a role in neuronal cell survival and autophagy. Abnormal expression of this gene and chromosomal translocation are related to cancer progression in many tissues.
