The brain and acute leukemia cytoplasmic protein, also known as BAALC, is a 180 amino acid protein that interacts with CAMK2A. BAALC is limited to the cytoplasm and cell membrane. BAALC is expressed in nerve cells and hematopoietic cells. In acute leukemia, it is expressed in normal early progenitor cells and the most immature primitive cells, but not in mature hematopoietic cells. BAALC may play a synaptic role in post-synaptic lipid rafts by interacting with CAMK2A.
