Azurocidin (HBP) is an inactive homologous serine protease that resides in granulocytes. Azurocidin protein lost its main proteolytic function during evolution, but gained another activity and became an important mediator of inflammatory response. Azurocidin has a wide range of antibacterial activities, mainly against Gram-negative bacteria. Azurocidin is a promising biomarker for identifying patients at risk of developing sepsis. Plasma HBP levels are related to the severity of infection, especially the development of circulatory failure. Elevated plasma HBP levels are closely related to the occurrence of hypotension, organ failure and septic shock. Due to its antibacterial properties, the elevated cerebrospinal fluid level of HBP distinguishes patients with acute bacterial meningitis from those with other central nervous system infections.
