Ferritin is a major iron storage protein, necessary to maintain iron homeostasis, and participates in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes. Ferritin makes iron available in key cellular processes while protecting lipids, DNA and proteins from the potentially toxic effects of iron. In clinical medicine, ferritin is mainly used as a sign of body iron reserves. In the case of iron deficiency and overload, serum ferritin plays a key role in diagnosis and management. Obviously, low ferritin values below the reference range usually indicate iron deficiency in the body. Recent studies have shown that ferritin provides a more sensitive, specific and reliable method for early determination of iron deficiency. On the other hand, patients with ferritin levels higher than the reference range may indicate iron overload, infection, inflammation, collagen disease, liver disease, tumor disease, and chronic renal failure.
