When someone develops iron deficiency, the plasma ferritin concentration drops very early. On the other hand, a large number of chronic diseases show elevated serum ferritin concentrations. The increase in plasma ferritin concentration also occurs in viral hepatitis or subsequent toxic liver injury, because ferritin is released from damaged liver cells. The plasma ferritin concentration increases with the increase of iron content and is seen in patients with hemosiderin or hemochromatosis. In addition, ferritin is used as an iron metabolism parameter, and has also gained an important role as a routine tumor marker for therapeutic drug monitoring and follow-up.
