The increase in plasma ferritin concentration also occurs in viral hepatitis or subsequent toxic liver injury, because ferritin is released from damaged liver cells. The plasma ferritin concentration increases with the increase of iron content and is seen in patients with hemosiderin or hemochromatosis.
