The protein encoded by this gene is a catalytic subunit of AMP activated protein kinase. AMPK is an important energy sensing enzyme for monitoring the energy state of cells. In response to cellular metabolic stress, AMPK is activated to phosphorylate and inactivate acetyl-coa carboxylase (ACC) and -hydroxy-methylglutarate coa reductase (HMGCR), which are key enzymes involved in regulating de novo biosynthetic of fatty acids and cholesterol. Studies of mouse counterparts have shown that this catalytic subunit controls systemic insulin sensitivity and is necessary to maintain myocardial energy homeostasis during ischemia.
