The synonym is NY-Lu-1 (lung cancer antigen). The protein encoded by this gene, aldolase A, is a glycolysis enzyme that catalyzes the reversible conversion of fructose-1, 6-diphosphate into glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone-phosphate. Aldolase A expression is inhibited in adult liver, kidney and intestine, similar to aldolase C levels in brain and other nerve tissues. Aldolase A deficiency is associated with myopathy and hemolytic anemia. The use of variable splicing and variable promoters results in a variety of transcriptional variants.
