What is missing in melanoma 2 (AIM2) is the cytoplasmic DNA sensor, it is responsible for the activation of inflammasomes and the host's immune response to DNA viruses and intracellular bacteria. After binding to DNA, it is believed to oligomerize and bind to PYCARD to initiate the recruitment of caspase-1 precursors and the processing of interleukin-1 and interleukin-18. In addition, it may act as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting the transcriptional activity of nf-kpa-b.
