Adiponectin (AdipoQ) is a hormone derived from fat cells and one of the most abundant adipokines in blood circulation. Adiponectin regulates many metabolic processes, including improving insulin sensitivity and anti-inflammatory activity. Adiponectin works by binding to two transmembrane AdipoQ receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2, to activate a series of different signaling molecules. AdipoR1 is mainly expressed in skeletal muscle, while AdipoR2 is mainly expressed in the liver. AdipoQ may play a role in cell growth, angiogenesis and tissue remodeling by binding and isolating various growth factors.
