ACE2 may be "shed" mediated by ADAM17 (disintegrin and metalloproteinase 17) from endothelial cells, resulting in the release of the extracellular domain into the circulatory system. By preventing the viral particles from binding to the surface-bound full-length ACE2, this soluble form can act as a competitive interceptor for SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses. Soluble ACE2 can also be used as a biomarker for hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
